The Devil is in The Details with Technique

I watched the Marcelo Garcia highlights video on Georgette’s Jiu-Jitsu World.  Marcelo makes it look so effortless getting to the back and most of all putting in that Rear Naked Choke.  But I’ve come to understand from experience that The devil is in the details.  I learned this when I tried to master the Triangle.  I found there were many unseen facets to the technique.  It took me a while to really get good at it.  I had to watch video of may different people doing it.  I read books telling the exact way.  But most of all I had to try it out and do reps of it.  At this point I think I have a good mastery of it.

My thoughts have turned to getting the back and the rear naked choke.  I feel  that same feeling I did when I first started learning the triangle choke.  I know the fundamentals but I don’t seem to be able to get it to work in a roll.  Marcelo inspired me to make it my next choke-of-choice.  Roy Dean has set me on the path to master it.  So who is really good and showing the nuances of getting to the back?

  1. If you were in DC, I would suggest to come to BETA this saturday, since JT Torres is doing a seminar there and he’s very well known for his back takes. Lloyd Irvin released a DVD series featuring him showing back takes from everywhere, but I don’t know if they still sell it (and I haven’t seen it, but I hear its good). And even though I have waaaaay too many DVDs that I never get to and my GF gets pissed when I buy more, I couldn’t resist the black friday sale at groundfighter (50% off!!!) and I ordered Ryan Hall’s back attack DVDs. They still haven’t gotten here yet, so I can’t vouch for them but I really liked his triangle tapes which is why I broke down and ordered it.

JT is doing seminars now, so you may be able to talk your school into booking him. The one at Beta is only $50.

Stephan Kesting has a great long youtube video on the RNC, but he doesn’t really show how to get there. Just different ways to set it up and finish/troubleshoot.

  2. I was snowed under with all the Black Friday e-mails. I missed that one. You will have to tell me what you think of Ryan Hall’s back attack DVDs. I’ll look into Lloyd Irvin’s also. Thanks for the tips.

  3. Hey– search my blog for the Grapplers Quest superfight this year between Ryan Hall and Hermes Franca. Ryan’s got a SUPER SICK backtake at about 2:46.

  4. Thanks, Georgette. I’ll check it out.
